Beauty Retouching by Freelance Retoucher John Deaville

I have carried out several Beauty Retouching projects in my 20 + years working as a retoucher. I offer beauty and fashion as one of a wide range of retouching niches as I have covered many areas.

My work has been used for Beauty and Cosmetics Campaigns by ModelsOwn, SleekMakeup, Lancome, Rodial, Avon and others.

Beauty Postproduction can be quite subjective as there is no ‘right’ or ‘perfect’ way of carrying out the task.

Some projects may require a full on beauty glamour retouch with flawless skin, hair and makeup, whilst many require a more natural and authentic style (more fashion/editorial). Therefore, I ask clients to provide a ‘mood-board’ of the sort of style they would like to acheive. In the first instance, I would provide a few retouched and graded finished images in order to establish that the client is satisfied with the results.

A typical job would require:

• Skin textures cleaning up It can be easy to overdo the smoothing and perfecting of skin textures. I tend to use a combination of frequency seperation and dodging and burning in order to create a more flawless complexion whilst keeping the integrity of the original texture.
• Hair/hairline. remove flyaway hairs and hairs crossing over.
• Perfecting teeth contours and colour
• Adding brightness and clarity to eyes
• Reducing dark areas under eyes
• Make up/eyelashes cleaning/altering
• Subtle contouring of the highlights and shadows of the face
• Creative tonal and colour grading

Additionally, I also use many of the same techniques when retouching portraits and people and fashion/editorial.
